- 18 – 33 years (General)Range varies by post-group. UG posts (Station Master, Goods Guard, Sr Clerk, Sr Time Keeper, Commercial Apprentice, Traffic Asst): 18-33. 12th-level posts (Junior Clerk, Trains Clerk): 18-30.
- Education
- Class 12 pass for under-graduate-level posts. Bachelor's degree for graduate-level posts.
- Junior Clerk / Trains Clerk: Class 12 from a recognised board.
- Station Master / Goods Guard / Commercial Apprentice / Sr Clerk: any Bachelor's degree.
- Junior Account Asst-cum-Typist: Bachelor's + typing speed in English (30 wpm) or Hindi (25 wpm) — tested at a later stage.

- Indian citizen (or specified categories — Nepal/Bhutan subjects, Tibetan refugees pre-1962, PIOs).
