Overview

Tamil Comprehension forms a significant portion of the Language I (Tamil) section in TN TET. This component tests your ability to read, understand, and interpret unseen Tamil passages — both prose (உரைநடை) and poetry (பாடல்). Unlike grammar questions where you can memorise rules, comprehension demands active reading skills and the ability to draw inferences beyond what is explicitly stated.

The exam typically presents one or two unseen passages followed by 5–10 questions each. These questions range from direct factual recall to deeper inference-based queries. Success here depends not on prior familiarity with the text but on systematic reading strategies and a strong Tamil vocabulary. Since this section carries substantial marks and tests practical language proficiency, mastering it can significantly boost your overall score.

For Paper I (Classes I–V) candidates, passages are simpler with straightforward vocabulary. Paper II (Classes VI–VIII) passages are more complex, with literary excerpts and abstract themes requiring deeper analysis.

**Poetic devices in verse passages**: When comprehending poetry, recognise simile (உவமை), metaphor (உருவகம்), alliteration (மோனை), rhyme (எதுகை), and repetition (இயைபு).

**Sequence and structure**: Understanding the logical flow — what comes first, what follows, how ideas connect.

**Author's purpose (எழுத்தாளரின் நோக்கம்)**: Why was this written — to inform, persuade, entertain, or describe?
