Synonyms and Antonyms
Overview
Synonyms and antonyms form the vocabulary backbone of the IBPS PO English section. While they rarely appear as standalone questions in Prelims, they are embedded within Reading Comprehension passages, Cloze Tests, and Fill in the Blanks. The exam typically asks you to identify a word that means the same as (synonym) or opposite to (antonym) a highlighted word in a passage.
Mastering this topic serves two purposes: it directly helps you score on vocabulary-based questions, and it dramatically improves your reading speed and comprehension accuracy. IBPS PO passages often use formal, banking, or editorial-style vocabulary, so familiarity with commonly tested word families gives you a clear edge.
The key to success is not memorising thousands of words but building a strong base of 400–500 high-frequency words with their common synonyms and antonyms. Context-based learning—understanding how words behave in sentences—matters more than rote dictionary definitions.
Key Concepts
- **Synonym** = a word with the same or nearly the same meaning as another word in a given context. Example: *begin* and *commence* are synonyms.
- **Antonym** = a word with the opposite meaning. Example: *expand* and *contract* are antonyms.
- **Context determines meaning**: Many words have multiple meanings. "Bright" can mean intelligent (synonym: smart) or luminous (synonym: radiant). Always check the sentence context before choosing.
- **Degree matters**: Synonyms are rarely perfect substitutes. "Angry" and "furious" are synonyms, but "furious" is stronger. IBPS often tests whether you can pick the closest match in degree.
- **Word roots help**: Knowing Latin/Greek roots lets you decode unfamiliar words. For example, *bene-* means good (benefactor, benevolent), *mal-* means bad (malicious, malfunction).
- **Prefixes create antonyms**: Adding prefixes like *un-*, *in-*, *dis-*, *mis-*, *non-* often reverses meaning. Happy → Unhappy, Adequate → Inadequate.
- **Positive/Negative tone**: Quickly classify words as positive, negative, or neutral. This helps eliminate wrong options even when you don't know the exact meaning.
