Apathit Padyansh (अपठित पद्यांश)
Overview
Apathit Padyansh refers to an unseen poem passage that appears in the Language I section of Bihar TET. Unlike prose passages, poetry demands a different reading approach — students must grasp meaning through condensed language, rhythm, imagery and emotional undertones. This section tests not just comprehension but also literary sensitivity.
In Bihar TET, expect one unseen poem followed by 5–8 questions. These questions assess your ability to understand the central theme (मूल भाव), identify poetic devices (अलंकार), interpret symbolic language, and recognize the poet's emotional intent (रस). Marks from this section are relatively easy to secure if you develop a systematic reading habit and familiarity with common literary devices.
Mastery here requires two parallel skills: first, the ability to decode meaning from unfamiliar verses quickly; second, knowledge of standard alankar, ras and chhanda terminology that examiners frequently test.
Key Concepts
- **Mool Bhav (मूल भाव)**: The central idea or theme the poet conveys — always identify this first before answering any question.
- **Sheerashak (शीर्षक)**: An appropriate title for the poem — it should capture the essence in 2–4 words and reflect the dominant emotion or subject.
- **Kavya ki Visheshatayen**: Poetry's special characteristics include rhythm (लय), rhyme (तुक), condensed expression (संक्षिप्तता) and emotional appeal (भावप्रधानता).
- **Pratik aur Bimb (प्रतीक और बिम्ब)**: Symbols and imagery — poets use concrete images (like river, lamp, cloud) to represent abstract ideas (life, hope, sorrow).
- **Ras (रस)**: The dominant emotional flavour — shringaar (love), veer (heroism), karun (pathos), hasya (humour), raudra (anger), bhayanak (fear), vibhatsa (disgust), adbhut (wonder), shant (peace).
- **Alankar (अलंकार)**: Ornaments of poetry that enhance beauty — they appear in nearly every exam and must be identified by definition.
- **Sandarbh Sahit Vyakhya**: Contextual explanation — linking a specific line to the overall meaning of the poem.
