National Standard Examination in Physics (NSEP)
National Standard Examination in Physics, conducted by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) — the first stage of India's selection for the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO). Roughly 60 questions in 120 minutes at Class 11-12 and early-college depth: mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics, waves and modern physics, with multi-concept problems and negative marking. Top performers qualify for INPhO. Open to students up to Class 12.

Kinematics & ProjectilesA particle moves along the x-axis with initial velocity 4 m/s and a time-dependent acceleration a = (3 - 2t) m/s², where t is in seconds. The particle starts from the origin at t = 0. The displacement of the particle when it first comes to rest is:

NSEP cutoffs
Historical cutoffs are a guide, not a prediction. Use them to set a realistic target, not to predict next year's exact number.
NSEP cutoff (qualifying for INPhO)
out of 240 marks (Part A objective + Part B subjective combined)HBCSE picks top ~300 candidates nationally for INPhO. Exact cutoffs vary by year and by Part A vs Part B performance balance.

Takeaways for prep planning
- NSEP problems are 2-3 levels deeper than JEE Advanced. Standard JEE prep covers ~50% of NSEP depth at best.
- Use Irodov + Krotov + Pathfinder for problem practice — JEE-only resources are insufficient.
- Part B (subjective) is where the candidates differentiate — Part A (objective) is qualifying but doesn't separate the top.
