Samas (समास)
Overview
Samas (समास) is the process in Hindi grammar of combining two or more words into a single compound word, thereby shortening the expression while retaining its meaning. The word "samas" itself means "संक्षेप" (abbreviation) or "संयोग" (joining). Understanding samas is essential for UPTET because 2–4 questions typically appear in the Hindi section, testing your ability to identify the samas type, break down compound words (विग्रह), and form new compounds.
Mastery of samas directly improves vocabulary recognition and comprehension skills—both tested in prose and poetry passages. The six main types you must know are Tatpurush, Dvandva, Dvigu, Karmadharaya, Bahuvrihi, and Avyayibhav. Each has a distinct structure: some emphasise the first word (पूर्वपद), others the second word (उत्तरपद), and some point to an entirely different meaning. Knowing the "pradhaan pad" (principal word) is the key to classification.

Key Concepts
- **Samas (समास)**: The grammatical process of combining two or more words; the resulting compound is called "सामासिक पद" or "समस्तपद."
- **Samas-vigrah (समास-विग्रह)**: Breaking down a compound word into its original components with the hidden preposition or relation made explicit.
- **Purva-pad (पूर्वपद)**: The first word in the compound.
- **Uttar-pad (उत्तरपद)**: The second word in the compound.
- **Pradhaan-pad (प्रधान पद)**: The principal or dominant word that carries the main meaning; identifying this determines the samas type.
- **Karak-chinh lop (कारक-चिह्न लोप)**: In samas, case markers (को, से, में, के लिए, etc.) are dropped but are restored during vigrah.
- **Anyapad-pradhaan**: In Bahuvrihi, the compound points to a third entity—neither the first nor second word is principal.
