Telugu – Study Notes for TS TET

Overview

Telugu is designated as Language I in TS TET for candidates who select it as their medium of instruction. This section tests your command over Telugu grammar (vyakaranam), comprehension of unseen prose and poetry passages, familiarity with classical and modern Telugu literature, and understanding of language teaching pedagogy.

For Paper I (Classes 1–5) and Paper II (Classes 6–8), Telugu Language I carries 30 marks. Approximately 15 marks test content (grammar, literature, comprehension) and 15 marks test pedagogy. Mastery requires not just knowing grammar rules but understanding how to teach them effectively in primary and upper-primary classrooms.

Students must focus on sandhi rules, samasas, alankaras, chandassu basics, and key literary figures from ancient to modern periods. Pedagogy questions demand familiarity with NCF 2005 principles, activity-based language teaching, and assessment strategies for LSRW skills.

Key Concepts

  • **Vyakaranam (Grammar) is rule-based**: Telugu grammar follows systematic rules for sound combinations (sandhi), word formation (samasa), and sentence construction. Understanding the logic behind rules aids both answering and teaching.
  • **Sandhi = Sound fusion**: When two words join, their boundary sounds often merge or change. Recognising the type of sandhi helps in word analysis and spelling.
  • **Samasa = Compound words**: Two or more words combine to form a single meaningful unit. Identifying the head word (pradhana padam) determines the samasa type.
  • **Vibhakti (Case endings)**: Telugu nouns take suffixes to indicate grammatical relations (subject, object, instrument, etc.). There are seven vibhaktis plus the sambodhana (vocative).
  • **Alankaras enhance literature**: Figures of speech (sabdalankaras for sound, arthalankaras for meaning) are central to poetry appreciation and comprehension questions.
  • **Chandassu (Prosody)**: Classical Telugu poetry follows metrical patterns. Recognise basic metres like ataveladi, tetagiti, sisa padyam, and kandamu.
  • **Literature spans three eras**: Adikavi Nannaya to modern poets like Sri Sri and Gurram Jashuva. Know representative works and contributions.
  • **Pedagogy aligns with NCF 2005**: Child-centred, activity-based, multilingual sensitivity, and continuous assessment are key principles.

Formulas / Key Facts

### Grammar Rules

| Sandhi Type | Rule | Example | |-------------|------|---------| | Savarnadirga | Same vowel + same vowel → long vowel | rama + alayam = ramalayam | | Gunasandhi | a/aa + i/ii/u/uu/ru → e/o/ar | maha + iswara = maheswara | | Vriddhi sandhi | a/aa + e/ai/o/au → ai/au | eka + ekam = ekaikam | | Visarga sandhi | Visarga changes based on following sound | varies by context |

### Vibhaktis (Case Endings)

1. Prathama (Nominative) – subject marker (zero ending or డు/ము) 2. Dvitiya (Accusative) – object marker (ను/ని) 3. Tritiya (Instrumental) – చేత/తో 4. Chaturthi (Dative) – కొరకు/కు 5. Panchami (Ablative) – నుండి/కంటె 6. Shashthi (Genitive) – యొక్క/లో 7. Saptami (Locative) – లో/న 8. Sambodhana (Vocative) – ఓ/ఓయి

### Samasa Types

  • Tatpurusha: Second word is principal (విద్యాలయం = విద్య + ఆలయం)
  • Karmadharaya: Adjective-noun relation (నీలమేఘం)
  • Dvandva: Copulative compound (తల్లిదండ్రులు)
  • Bahuvrihi: Meaning external to both components
  • Dvigu: Numeral as first member (త్రిలోకం)

### Key Literary Figures

| Period | Poet | Major Work | |--------|------|------------| | Ancient | Nannaya | Andhra Mahabharatam (Adiparva) | | Ancient | Tikkana | Mahabharatam (15 parvas) | | Ancient | Errapragada | Mahabharatam (Aranya parva) – Kavitrayam completion | | Medieval | Pothana | Bhagavatam | | Medieval | Srinatha | Sringaranaishadham | | Modern | Kandukuri | Rajasekhara Charitramu (first Telugu novel) | | Modern | Gurazada | Kanyasulkam (first social play) | | Modern | Sri Sri | Mahaprasthanam |

### Pedagogy Facts

  • NCF 2005: Language is learnt, not taught; focus on meaning over form
  • Mother tongue instruction strengthens cognitive development
  • LSRW sequence: Listening → Speaking → Reading → Writing
  • CCE uses portfolios, observation, oral tests alongside written exams

---

Worked Examples

### Example 1: Identify the Sandhi **Question**: విద్యార్థి = విద్య + అర్థి. What sandhi is this?

**Solution**:

  • విద్య ends with అ (a)
  • అర్థి starts with అ (a)
  • Same vowel (a + a) combines to form long ఆ (aa)
  • This is **Savarnadirga Sandhi**

---

### Example 2: Identify Vibhakti **Question**: "రాముడు పుస్తకాన్ని చదివాడు" – identify the vibhakti of "పుస్తకాన్ని"

**Solution**:

  • పుస్తకం + ను/ని = పుస్తకాన్ని
  • The suffix "ని" marks the object of the verb
  • This is **Dvitiya Vibhakti (Accusative case)**

---

### Example 3: Alankara Identification **Question**: "ముఖం చంద్రునివంటిది" – which alankara?

**Solution**:

  • Face is compared to moon using "వంటిది" (like)
  • Explicit comparison with upamana (moon) and upameya (face)
  • Comparison word present → **Upama Alankara**

(If it were "ముఖచంద్రుడు" without comparison word, it would be Rupaka)

---

Common Mistakes

  • **Confusing Upama and Rupaka**: Upama uses explicit comparison words (వంటి, లాగా, వలె). Rupaka directly equates without comparison words. → Always check for comparison markers.
  • **Misidentifying Sandhi types**: Students often confuse Guna and Vriddhi sandhi. → Remember: Guna produces e/o/ar; Vriddhi produces ai/au.
  • **Ignoring context in Vibhakti**: The same suffix can appear differently based on the noun ending. → Focus on the grammatical function (subject/object/instrument), not just the suffix form.
  • **Mixing up Kavitrayam poets**: Nannaya started, Tikkana wrote most, Errapragada completed Mahabharatam. → Use mnemonic: NTE (Nannaya-Tikkana-Errapragada) in chronological order.
  • **Neglecting pedagogy weightage**: Students over-focus on grammar and ignore 50% pedagogy marks. → Study NCF 2005 principles, LSRW methods, and CCE equally.
  • **Literal translation in comprehension**: Telugu idioms (జాతీయాలు) and proverbs (సామెతలు) need contextual understanding. → Learn common idioms and their implied meanings.

---

Quick Reference

  • **Sandhis**: Savarnadirga (same vowel merges), Guna (a + i/u → e/o), Vriddhi (a + e/o → ai/au)
  • **Vibhaktis**: 7 cases + Sambodhana; Dvitiya (object) uses ను/ని
  • **Kavitrayam**: Nannaya + Tikkana + Errapragada = Andhra Mahabharatam
  • **First Telugu novel**: Rajasekhara Charitramu by Kandukuri Veeresalingam
  • **Sabdalankara vs Arthalankara**: Sound-based (yamakam, anuprasa) vs meaning-based (upama, rupaka, utpreksha)
  • **Pedagogy mantra**: LSRW order, child-centred approach, multilingual classroom sensitivity, CCE over one-time exams
