*Analysis*: This demonstrates formal operational thinking—the ability to reason about hypothetical situations and think abstractly. A concrete operational child would struggle with such "what if" questions that have no physical referent.

Common Mistakes

  • **Confusing assimilation with accommodation** → Assimilation is fitting new info into existing schemas (child calls cow a "big dog"); accommodation is changing schemas to fit new info (child creates new schema for "cow"). Remember: Assimilation = Adding to existing; Accommodation = Adjusting the schema.
  • **Assuming stages have rigid age boundaries** → Piaget gave approximate ages. A bright 6-year-old might show some concrete operational thinking. Focus on the sequence being invariant, not the exact ages.
  • **Thinking formal operations is universal** → Not all adults reach or consistently use formal operational thinking. Piaget himself acknowledged this later. Don't assume everyone above 11 thinks abstractly.
