Overview

Earth and Landforms is a foundational topic in geography that forms the basis for understanding physical geography questions in MAHA TET Paper II Social Studies. This topic covers the structure of Earth, the processes that shape its surface, and the three major landforms—mountains, plateaus, and plains—that result from these processes.

For MAHA TET, you must understand both the scientific concepts (Earth's layers, plate tectonics, weathering and erosion) and the specific examples from India and the world. Questions typically test your ability to classify landforms, identify their formation processes, and recall important examples with their locations. This topic connects directly to map reading, climate patterns, and economic geography, making it essential for integrated understanding.

Mastery requires memorising definitions, formation processes, and at least 3-4 examples of each landform type, particularly those in India and Maharashtra.

  • **Earth's Shape and Size**: Earth is an oblate spheroid (slightly flattened at poles, bulging at equator). Equatorial diameter is 12,756 km; polar diameter is 12,714 km. The difference of 42 km causes the oblate shape.
  • **Earth's Interior Layers**: Three main layers—Crust (outermost, 5-70 km thick), Mantle (middle, about 2,900 km thick, semi-molten), and Core (innermost, outer core is liquid, inner core is solid iron-nickel).
  • **Lithosphere and Tectonic Plates**: The lithosphere (crust + upper mantle) is broken into large plates that float on the asthenosphere. Plate movements cause earthquakes, volcanic activity, and mountain building.
  • **Endogenic vs Exogenic Forces**: Endogenic forces originate inside Earth (volcanism, earthquakes, folding, faulting) and build landforms. Exogenic forces originate outside (weathering, erosion, deposition) and wear down landforms.
  • **Mountains**: Elevated landforms with steep slopes, small summit area, and height generally above 600 metres. Three types based on formation—fold, block, and volcanic mountains.
  • **Plateaus**: Elevated flat-topped landforms with at least one steep side. Also called tablelands. Formed by volcanic activity, uplift, or erosion of surrounding areas.
  • **Plains**: Low-lying flat or gently undulating land, usually below 200 metres elevation. Formed mainly by river deposition, and cover about 55% of Earth's land surface.
  • **Weathering and Erosion Distinction**: Weathering is the in-situ breakdown of rocks (no movement). Erosion involves breakdown plus transport of material by agents like rivers, wind, glaciers, and waves.

**Types of Mountains with Examples**:

  • Fold Mountains: Himalayas, Alps, Andes, Rockies (formed by plate collision)
  • Block Mountains: Vosges and Black Forest (Germany), Satpura Range (formed by faulting)
  • Volcanic Mountains: Mount Fuji (Japan), Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania)

**Types of Plateaus**:

  • Intermontane: Tibetan Plateau (between mountain ranges)
  • Piedmont: Patagonian Plateau (at mountain foot)
  • Continental/Lava: Deccan Plateau (formed by volcanic lava)

**Types of Plains**:

  • Structural: Formed by horizontal rock beds (Russian Plains)
  • Erosional: Formed by wearing down of highlands
  • Depositional: Formed by river/glacial deposits (Indo-Gangetic Plain, Mississippi Plain)

**Example 1**: Classify the following landforms—Himalayas, Deccan Plateau, Northern Indian Plains.

*Solution*:

  • Himalayas → Young fold mountains, formed by collision of Indian and Eurasian plates about 50 million years ago. Still rising by about 1 cm per year.
  • Deccan Plateau → Lava/volcanic plateau, formed by volcanic eruptions during Cretaceous period. Covered with black basalt soil (regur).
  • Northern Indian Plains → Depositional plain, formed by alluvial deposits of rivers Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Indus over millions of years.

**Example 2**: How are fold mountains formed?

*Solution*: Step 1: Sediments accumulate in a geosyncline (shallow sea between two landmasses). Step 2: Tectonic plates move towards each other (convergent boundary). Step 3: The sedimentary layers get compressed and squeezed. Step 4: Compression causes the layers to fold upwards (anticlines) and downwards (synclines). Step 5: Continued pressure raises these folds into mountain ranges. Example: Himalayas formed when Indian plate collided with Eurasian plate.

**Example 3**: Why are plains densely populated?

*Solution*:

  • Flat terrain allows easy construction of houses, roads, and railways.
  • Fertile alluvial soil supports agriculture.
  • Rivers provide water for irrigation, drinking, and transport.
  • Industries develop due to easy transport and raw material access.
  • Example: Indo-Gangetic Plain is one of the most densely populated regions in the world.

Common Mistakes

  • **Confusing weathering with erosion** → Weathering has no movement; erosion involves transport. A rock breaking apart due to temperature change is weathering. The same rock fragments being carried away by a river is erosion.
  • **Thinking all mountains are the same type** → Students often forget that mountains are classified by formation process. The Himalayas (fold), Satpuras (block), and Kilimanjaro (volcanic) formed by completely different processes.
  • **Assuming plateaus are always at great heights** → Plateaus are defined by their flat top and steep sides, not just elevation. The Chotanagpur Plateau averages only 300-600 metres but is still a plateau.
  • **Confusing Deccan Plateau with Deccan Trap** → Deccan Plateau is the landform; Deccan Trap refers specifically to the basalt rock layers formed by volcanic eruptions that cover the plateau.
  • **Forgetting that plains include coastal plains** → Students focus only on river plains. India has extensive coastal plains—Western Coastal Plain (Konkan, Malabar) and Eastern Coastal Plain (Coromandel).
