Vocabulary: Synonyms, Antonyms and One-Word Substitution
Overview
Vocabulary questions form a consistent scoring section in KTET Language II (English). These questions test your word knowledge without complex grammar rules—if you know the word, you score; if you don't, you can't guess easily. The three main question types are synonyms (words with similar meanings), antonyms (words with opposite meanings), and one-word substitutions (single words replacing phrases).
This topic appears across all KTET categories and typically contributes 5-8 questions in Language II. Unlike comprehension passages that require time-consuming reading, vocabulary questions can be answered quickly if you have built a strong word bank. The key to mastering this section is systematic learning of common word pairs and frequently tested one-word substitutions rather than memorising an entire dictionary.
Focus your preparation on words commonly used in educational contexts, everyday communication, and standard English usage—KTET does not test obscure or highly technical vocabulary.
Key Concepts
- **Synonyms** are words with the same or nearly the same meaning. Context matters—"big" and "large" are synonyms, but "big decision" sounds natural while "large decision" does not.
- **Antonyms** are words with opposite meanings. They can be formed using prefixes (happy/unhappy), or be completely different words (hot/cold).
- **One-word substitution** replaces a descriptive phrase with a single precise word. Example: "A person who loves books" = bibliophile.
- **Root words, prefixes and suffixes** help decode unfamiliar words. Knowing "bene" means good helps understand benevolent, beneficial, benefactor.
- **Degree of meaning** matters—synonyms are rarely perfect substitutes. "Angry" and "furious" are synonyms, but furious is more intense.
- **Word families** help expand vocabulary efficiently. Learn related forms: beauty (noun), beautiful (adjective), beautifully (adverb), beautify (verb).
- **Context clues** in exam questions often hint at the correct answer even if you don't know the exact word.
