Common Mistakes

  • **Confusing latitude with longitude direction** → Latitude lines appear horizontal but measure vertical (N-S) distance from Equator. Longitude lines appear vertical but measure horizontal (E-W) distance from Prime Meridian.
  • **Thinking seasons are caused by distance from Sun** → Seasons result from axial tilt, not distance. Earth is actually closest to Sun (perihelion) in January when Northern Hemisphere has winter.
  • **Adding time for places west of reference** → Places east of a reference point are ahead in time; places west are behind. Students often reverse this.
