Non-Verbal Reasoning tests your ability to analyse visual information without relying on language or numerical data. In HTET, this section typically carries 3-5 questions and appears across all three levels (PRT, TGT, PGT). The questions assess spatial visualization, pattern recognition, and logical thinking through figures rather than words.
This topic is scoring if you master the underlying principles, as the question types are predictable: mirror images, water images, and embedded figures. Unlike verbal reasoning where language proficiency matters, non-verbal reasoning rewards practice and systematic approach. Students who understand the transformation rules can solve these questions in under 30 seconds each, saving valuable time for other sections.
The key to mastering this area is developing a mental model of how figures transform under different conditions—reflection across vertical axes (mirror), reflection across horizontal axes (water), and identifying hidden shapes within complex figures.

- **Mirror Image Principle**: When an object is placed before a vertical mirror, left and right sides interchange while top and bottom remain unchanged. The image appears as if you're looking at the object's reflection in a dressing mirror.
- **Water Image Principle**: When an object is reflected in still water (horizontal surface), top and bottom interchange while left and right remain unchanged. Think of looking at your reflection in a pond.
- **Embedded Figure**: A smaller figure hidden within a larger, more complex figure. The embedded figure maintains its exact shape, size, and orientation—it is simply camouflaged among additional lines.
- **Lateral Inversion**: In mirror images, letters/numbers facing right will face left and vice versa. The sequence of elements reverses horizontally.

**Solution**: 1. Note the exact shape: triangle with specific proportions 2. Check each option systematically 3. Look for the complete triangle—all three sides must be present 4. The triangle must maintain same orientation (not rotated unless question allows) 5. Trace the triangle's outline within the complex figure 6. If all sides are traceable as part of the complex figure, that's your answer
**Strategy**: Start from a distinctive vertex of the embedded figure and trace each side.
Common Mistakes
- **Confusing mirror and water images**: Students apply vertical inversion for mirror images. Remember—mirror (vertical axis) = left-right swap; water (horizontal axis) = top-bottom swap.
- **Rotating instead of reflecting**: A mirror image is NOT a rotated figure. Rotation turns the figure; reflection flips it. If you rotate 'd' by 180°, you get 'p', but mirror image of 'd' is 'b'.
- **Accepting partial matches in embedded figures**: Students select options where only part of the required figure is visible. The COMPLETE figure must be embedded, not just a portion.
- **Ignoring small details**: A single dot, small line, or arrow direction can make an option wrong. Always verify every element of the original figure in your answer.
- **Assuming rotation is allowed in embedded figures**: Unless the question explicitly states "figure may be rotated," the embedded figure must be in the SAME orientation as the question figure.
