Hindi (Language I) — Study Notes for GTET

Overview

Hindi as Language I in GTET assesses a candidate's command over Hindi grammar (Vyakaran), familiarity with major literary figures and movements, and ability to comprehend unseen passages. This section typically carries 30 marks and tests both content knowledge and pedagogical understanding of how Hindi is taught at the primary or upper-primary level.

For GTET aspirants, Hindi Language I demands a balance between rote recall (literary figures, dates, grammatical terms) and applied skills (passage comprehension, error identification). Students who studied Hindi up to Class XII usually find the content manageable, but exam success depends on precision with grammatical rules and quick recall of literary contributions. Mastering Sandhi, Samas, Alankar and Chand is non-negotiable, as grammar questions dominate the paper.

Key Concepts

  • **Sandhi (संधि)** — The joining of two sounds (varnas) following specific phonetic rules. Three main types: Swar Sandhi, Vyanjan Sandhi, Visarg Sandhi.
  • **Samas (समास)** — Compound formation where two or more words combine to form a single meaningful unit. Six primary types tested: Avyayibhav, Tatpurush, Karmadharaya, Dvigu, Dvandva, Bahuvrihi.
  • **Alankar (अलंकार)** — Figures of speech that beautify language. Two broad categories: Shabdalankar (sound-based: Anupras, Yamak, Shlesh) and Arthalankar (meaning-based: Upma, Rupak, Utpreksha, Atishayokti).
  • **Chand (छंद)** — Metrical verse patterns based on matra (syllabic weight) or varna (letter count). Common exam examples: Doha, Chaupai, Soratha, Kundaliya.
  • **Ras (रस)** — The emotional essence of literary work. Nine rasas (Navras): Shringar, Hasya, Karun, Raudra, Veer, Bhayanak, Bibhatsa, Adbhut, Shant.
  • **Literary Periods** — Hindi literature divided into Adikal, Bhaktikal, Ritikal and Adhunikal. Each period has defining characteristics and representative poets.
  • **Comprehension Skills** — Ability to extract main idea, infer meaning, identify tone, and answer factual/inferential questions from unseen prose and poetry.

| Topic | Key Rule / Fact | |-------|-----------------| | Swar Sandhi | Guna Sandhi: a/aa + i/ii = e; a/aa + u/uu = o | | Dirgh Sandhi | Same swar combine to form dirgh: a+a = aa, i+i = ii | | Tatpurush Samas | Second word (uttarpad) is principal; karak vibhakti hidden | | Bahuvrihi Samas | Meaning lies outside both words (anyapadpradhan) | | Anupras Alankar | Repetition of consonant sounds (vyanjanon ki avritti) | | Upma Alankar | Explicit comparison using "sa", "si", "jaisa", "jaise" | | Rupak Alankar | Metaphor — upmeya and upman shown as identical (abheda) | | Doha Chand | 13-11 matras in each line; total 24 matras per line-pair | | Chaupai Chand | 16 matras in each of four lines; used by Tulsidas |

### Literature Must-Know

| Period | Timeline | Key Poets / Writers | |--------|----------|---------------------| | Adikal (Veergathakal) | 8th–14th century | Chandarbardai (Prithviraj Raso), Amir Khusro | | Bhaktikal | 14th–17th century | Kabir, Surdas, Tulsidas, Meera, Raidas | | Ritikal | 17th–19th century | Bihari, Keshavdas, Ghananand, Bhushan | | Adhunikal | 19th century onwards | Bharatendu, Premchand, Mahadevi Verma, Nirala, Pant, Dinkar |

**Surdas** — Sursagar; Krishna bhakti; Vatsalya and Shringar ras specialist.

**Mahadevi Verma** — Chhayavad poet; works: Yama, Neehaar, Rashmirathi (Dinkar's).

**Harivansh Rai Bachchan** — Madhushala; post-Chhayavad romantic poetry.

Worked Examples

### Example 1: Identify the Sandhi **Question:** "विद्यालय" में कौन-सी संधि है?

**Solution:**

  • Break the word: विद्या + आलय
  • Here आ (aa) + आ (aa) = आ (aa)
  • Same swar combining = **Dirgh Sandhi** (specifically Dirgh Swar Sandhi)

---

### Example 2: Identify the Samas **Question:** "चौराहा" में कौन-सा समास है?

**Solution:**

  • Vigraha: चार राहों का समूह
  • A numeral (चार) + noun forming a collective
  • This is **Dvigu Samas** (संख्यापूर्वक समास)

---

### Example 3: Identify the Alankar **Question:** "पीपर पात सरिस मन डोला" में अलंकार बताइए।

**Solution:**

  • Comparison: मन is compared to पीपल का पत्ता
  • "सरिस" (like/as) indicates explicit comparison
  • This is **Upma Alankar** (उपमा अलंकार)
  • Upmeya: मन, Upman: पीपर पात, Vachak shabd: सरिस

Common Mistakes

  • **Confusing Rupak with Upma** → Upma uses comparison words (जैसा, सा, सम, सरिस); Rupak shows identity without comparison words. If you see "मुख चंद्र है" (identity), it is Rupak. If "मुख चंद्र जैसा है" (comparison), it is Upma.
  • **Tatpurush vs Bahuvrihi confusion** → In Tatpurush, meaning resides in the compound itself. In Bahuvrihi, the meaning points to a third entity. "Lambodara" = one who has a large belly (points to Ganesha) = Bahuvrihi. "Rajkumar" = king's son (meaning within) = Tatpurush.
  • **Mixing up Swar and Vyanjan Sandhi** → Swar Sandhi involves vowel combinations only. The moment a consonant transforms or assimilates (like म् before प becoming अनुस्वार), consider Vyanjan Sandhi.
  • **Ignoring matra count in Chand** → Students identify Doha by appearance but forget to verify 13-11 matra pattern. Always count matras: laghu (ह्रस्व) = 1 matra, guru (दीर्घ/संयुक्त) = 2 matras.
  • **Attributing wrong works to authors** — Rashmirathi is by Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, not Mahadevi Verma. Ramcharitmanas is Tulsidas (Awadhi), not Surdas. Cross-verify author-work pairs before answering.

Quick Reference

1. **Sandhi = Sound joining** | Samas = Word compounding | Alankar = Ornamentation

2. **Doha: 13-11 matras** | Chaupai: 16-16-16-16 matras

3. **Bhaktikal poets:** Kabir (Nirguna), Surdas/Tulsi/Meera (Saguna)

4. **Premchand = Godan, Gaban** | Tulsidas = Ramcharitmanas | Surdas = Sursagar

5. **Upma uses "जैसा/सा/सम"** | Rupak shows direct identity (no comparison word)

6. **Chhayavad quartet:** Prasad, Nirala, Pant, Mahadevi Verma
