**Example 2**: A child complains of bleeding gums and wounds that heal slowly. Which nutrient deficiency is likely? Suggest food items to correct it.

*Solution*: These symptoms indicate Vitamin C deficiency (scurvy). Foods to include: amla (Indian gooseberry), oranges, lemons, guava, tomatoes, and green chillies — all rich in Vitamin C.

**Example 3**: Why does grandmother add salt while making mango pickle?

*Solution*: Salt acts as a preservative. It draws out moisture from the mango pieces, creating an environment where bacteria and fungi cannot grow easily. This is the salting method of food preservation.

Common Mistakes

  • **Confusing energy-giving and body-building foods** → Carbohydrates and fats give energy; proteins build the body. Remember: "CaFe gives Energy" (Carbs, Fats = Energy).
  • **Thinking vitamins provide energy** → Vitamins regulate body functions but do not provide calories or energy. Only carbohydrates, fats and proteins provide energy.
  • **Mixing up Vitamin A and Vitamin D deficiencies** → Night blindness is Vitamin A deficiency (think "A for eyes at night"). Rickets (bone problems) is Vitamin D deficiency (think "D for bones/Daylight").
  • **Believing all preservation methods are modern** → Traditional Indian methods like drying, salting, and using oil/spices are centuries old. Refrigeration and canning are modern.
  • **Ignoring roughage/fibre** → Students forget that roughage (found in vegetables, fruits, whole grains) is essential for digestion even though it provides no nutrients. It prevents constipation.
