**Example 2: Interpreting Deviation IQ** In a standardised test, the mean score is 50 with SD of 10. A student scores 65. Calculate the deviation IQ.

Solution:

  • IQ = 100 + 15 × [(65 − 50) / 10]
  • IQ = 100 + 15 × [15 / 10]
  • IQ = 100 + 15 × 1.5
  • IQ = 100 + 22.5 = 122.5 ≈ 123

Interpretation: The student falls in the superior intelligence range.

**Example 3: Identifying Test Type** A teacher wants to assess intelligence of children from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Which test is most appropriate?

Solution: Raven's Progressive Matrices is ideal because it is a non-verbal, culture-fair test that does not depend on language proficiency or specific cultural knowledge.

Common Mistakes

  • **Treating IQ as fixed and unchangeable** → IQ can improve with enriched environment, quality education and proper intervention. Teachers should view it as a current snapshot, not a permanent label.
  • **Using ratio IQ formula for adults** → Ratio IQ becomes meaningless after age 16 as mental age plateaus while chronological age continues. Deviation IQ must be used for older students and adults.
  • **Equating IQ with overall ability or worth** → IQ measures only certain cognitive abilities. It does not capture creativity, emotional intelligence, practical skills or motivation. Teachers must assess holistically.
  • **Ignoring cultural bias in tests** → Many traditional IQ tests favour urban, middle-class, English-speaking populations. Using such tests for rural or tribal children produces invalid results. Culture-fair tests like Raven's should be preferred.
  • **Making educational decisions based on single test score** → IQ tests have measurement error. Multiple assessments over time, combined with teacher observation and portfolio review, give a truer picture.
