Sandhi (संधि)

Overview

Sandhi is one of the most frequently tested grammar topics in CG TET Language I (Hindi). The term "Sandhi" literally means "joining" — it refers to the phonetic changes that occur when two sounds (varnas) come together at the junction of two words or morphemes. Understanding Sandhi is essential because questions appear both directly (identify the type of Sandhi) and indirectly (in word-formation and comprehension passages).

For CG TET Paper I and Paper II, you must know the three main categories — Swar Sandhi, Vyanjan Sandhi, and Visarg Sandhi — along with their subtypes. Typically, 2-4 questions test your ability to identify the Sandhi type, perform Sandhi-vichchhed (splitting), or form new words through Sandhi. Mastery here also strengthens your grasp of Hindi word origins and spelling conventions.

The key skill is pattern recognition: once you know the characteristic sound changes for each type, you can quickly identify or construct the correct answer under exam pressure.

Key Concepts

  • **Sandhi Definition**: When two varnas (sounds) come close, they combine and undergo a phonetic change. This change is called Sandhi.
  • **Sandhi-vichchhed**: The process of separating a combined word back into its original components (e.g., विद्यालय → विद्या + आलय).
  • **Three Main Types**: Based on which sounds combine — vowels (swar), consonants (vyanjan), or visarg (:).
  • **Swar Sandhi**: Occurs when two vowels meet. Has five subtypes: Dirgh, Gun, Vriddhi, Yan, and Ayadi.
  • **Vyanjan Sandhi**: Occurs when a consonant meets a vowel or another consonant. Sound changes follow specific phonetic rules.
  • **Visarg Sandhi**: Occurs when Visarg (:) meets a vowel or consonant. Visarg may convert to स्, र्, or merge with the following sound.
  • **Sanskrit Origin**: Most Sandhi rules come from Sanskrit and apply to tatsam words in Hindi.
  • **Exam Pattern**: Questions ask you to identify Sandhi type, perform vichchhed, or find the correctly joined form.

### Vyanjan Sandhi (Key Rules)

  • **Varg ka पहला वर्ण → तीसरा वर्ण** before voiced sound: दिक् + गज = दिग्गज
  • **Varg ka पहला वर्ण → पाँचवाँ वर्ण (nasal)** before nasal: वाक् + मय = वाङ्मय
  • **त् changes**: त् + श = च्छ (सत् + शास्त्र = सच्छास्त्र); त् + ज = ज्ज (सत् + जन = सज्जन)
  • **म् before consonant** → अनुस्वार or varg-nasal: सम् + तोष = संतोष
  • **छ doubling**: Any short vowel + छ often inserts च्: परि + छेद = परिच्छेद

### Visarg Sandhi (Key Rules)

Common Mistakes

  • **Confusing Gun and Vriddhi Sandhi** → Gun produces ए, ओ, अर्; Vriddhi produces ऐ, औ. Check the resulting vowel carefully.
  • **Ignoring Visarg rules** → Students often forget Visarg can become र्, स्, or श् based on the following consonant. Always check what letter follows the Visarg.
  • **Treating Yan and Ayadi as the same** → Yan converts इ/उ/ऋ to य्/व्/र् (semi-vowels); Ayadi converts ए/ऐ/ओ/औ to अय्/आय्/अव्/आव्. The input vowels are different.
  • **Overlooking consonant voicing** → In Vyanjan Sandhi, unvoiced consonants (क, च, ट, त, प) change before voiced sounds. Forgetting this leads to wrong vichchhed.
  • **Spelling errors in combined forms** → After applying rules, double-check the matra placement. For example, निः + आशा = निराशा (not निरआशा).

Quick Reference

1. **Dirgh**: Same swar + same swar → long swar (अ+आ=आ, इ+ई=ई, उ+ऊ=ऊ)

2. **Gun**: अ/आ + इ/ई/उ/ऊ/ऋ → ए/ओ/अर्

3. **Vriddhi**: अ/आ + ए/ऐ/ओ/औ → ऐ/औ

4. **Yan**: इ/ई/उ/ऊ/ऋ + different swar → य्/व्/र् + swar

5. **Ayadi**: ए/ऐ/ओ/औ + different swar → अय्/आय्/अव्/आव् + swar

6. **Visarg before voiced** → Visarg becomes र् (निः + धन = निर्धन)
