Overview

Environmental Studies (EVS) is a foundational subject at the primary level (Classes III–V) introduced under the National Curriculum Framework 2005. It replaces separate science and social science teaching with an integrated approach that connects children's immediate surroundings—home, school, neighbourhood—to broader themes of nature, society and citizenship.

Common Mistakes

  • **Treating EVS as simplified science** → EVS is not "easy science"; it is an integrated subject with equal emphasis on social dimensions. Questions about family, community and culture are equally important as questions about plants and animals.
  • **Ignoring local context** → Students assume EVS content is universal. In Assam TET, expect questions connecting EVS to Assam-specific contexts like Brahmaputra floods, Muga silk, one-horned rhino, Bihu festival and ethnic communities.
  • **Confusing EVS with Environmental Education** → Environmental Education (EE) is a broader concept taught across all levels. EVS is a specific subject for Classes III–V. Do not use the terms interchangeably.
  • **Thinking EVS has no scope beyond nature** → EVS equally covers social environment—family relationships, community helpers, transport, communication, cultural practices. "Environment" means both natural and human-made surroundings.
  • **Expecting EVS to have separate science and social studies marks** → EVS is assessed as one integrated subject. There is no division of marks between science and social science components.
