Voice and Reported Speech

Overview

Voice and Reported Speech are fundamental grammar concepts tested in AP TET Paper I and Paper II under Language II (English). These topics assess your ability to transform sentences while preserving meaning—a skill essential for effective classroom teaching. Examiners frequently test your understanding of structural changes required when converting active to passive voice and direct to indirect speech.

Mastering these concepts serves two purposes: scoring marks in the content section and understanding pedagogical applications for teaching English grammar to primary and upper primary students. Questions typically involve sentence transformation, error identification, and fill-in-the-blanks. Expect 3–5 questions from these topics combined.

Key Concepts

**Voice (Active and Passive)**

  • **Active Voice**: The subject performs the action. Structure: Subject + Verb + Object. Example: *Ravi writes a letter.*
  • **Passive Voice**: The subject receives the action. Structure: Object (as new subject) + be-verb + past participle + by + agent. Example: *A letter is written by Ravi.*
  • **Agent retention**: The "by + agent" phrase is often omitted when the doer is unknown, unimportant, or obvious from context.
  • **Only transitive verbs** (verbs with objects) can be converted to passive voice. Intransitive verbs like *sleep*, *arrive*, *die* cannot form passive.
  • **Tense of the main verb determines the form of "be"**: The auxiliary "be" changes according to tense while the main verb always becomes past participle.

**Reported Speech (Direct and Indirect)**

  • **Direct Speech**: Exact words of the speaker within quotation marks. Example: *She said, "I am tired."*
  • **Indirect Speech**: Speaker's words reported without quotation marks, with necessary changes in pronouns, tenses, and time expressions. Example: *She said that she was tired.*
  • **Reporting verb** (said, told, asked) guides the structure of indirect speech. "Told" requires an object; "said" does not.
  • **Backshift of tense**: When the reporting verb is in past tense, the tense in the reported clause typically shifts one step back.
  • **Universal truths and habitual facts** do not require tense change. Example: *He said, "The sun rises in the east"* becomes *He said that the sun rises in the east.*

Worked Examples

**Example 1: Active to Passive (Simple Past)**

*Active*: The police arrested the thief.

*Step 1*: Identify subject (The police), verb (arrested), object (the thief). *Step 2*: Object becomes new subject → The thief *Step 3*: Add appropriate "be" verb for simple past → was *Step 4*: Main verb becomes past participle → arrested *Step 5*: Original subject becomes agent → by the police

*Passive*: The thief was arrested by the police.

---

**Example 2: Direct to Indirect (Statement)**

*Direct*: Ram said, "I have completed my homework."

*Step 1*: Remove quotation marks and add "that" after reporting verb. *Step 2*: Change pronoun: I → he, my → his *Step 3*: Backshift tense: have completed → had completed

*Indirect*: Ram said that he had completed his homework.

---

**Example 3: Direct to Indirect (Question)**

*Direct*: She asked, "Where do you live?"

*Step 1*: Reporting verb "asked" remains; no "that" needed for wh-questions. *Step 2*: Change pronoun: you → I (assuming she asked me) *Step 3*: Backshift tense: do live → lived *Step 4*: Convert to statement word order (subject before verb)

*Indirect*: She asked me where I lived.

---

**Example 4: Imperative to Indirect**

*Direct*: The teacher said, "Open your books."

*Step 1*: Use "to + infinitive" for commands. *Step 2*: Add object if needed; change pronoun.

*Indirect*: The teacher told the students to open their books.

Common Mistakes

  • **Using passive with intransitive verbs** → *He was died* is incorrect. "Die" has no object; passive is impossible. Correct: *He died.*
  • **Forgetting the past participle in passive** → Writing *The letter was wrote* instead of *was written*. Always use the third form of the verb.
  • **Double backshift in reported speech** → If the original is already in past perfect, do not shift further. *She said, "I had finished"* becomes *She said that she had finished* (no change needed).
  • **Retaining quotation marks in indirect speech** → Indirect speech never uses quotation marks. Remove them and restructure the sentence.
  • **Incorrect pronoun conversion** → Pronouns change based on who is speaking and who is being addressed. Analyse the context: first person in direct becomes third person relative to the reporter.
  • **Forgetting word order change in reported questions** → *She asked where did I live* is wrong. Correct order: *She asked where I lived* (statement order, no auxiliary inversion).

Quick Reference

  • **Passive formula**: Object + be (tense-matched) + past participle + by + subject (optional)
  • **Only transitive verbs** take passive voice.
  • **Reported speech backshift**: Present → Past; Past → Past Perfect; Will → Would.
  • **Universal truths**: No tense change in indirect speech.
  • **Imperatives in indirect**: Use *told/ordered/requested + object + to + infinitive*.
  • **Reported questions**: No question mark; statement word order; use *if/whether* for yes-no questions.
