Piaget, a Swiss psychologist, proposed that children are not passive receivers of knowledge but active constructors who build understanding through interaction with their environment. This aligns directly with the constructivist approach emphasised in modern pedagogy.
For AP TET, you must know the four stages of cognitive development, the age ranges associated with each, key characteristics, and the foundational concepts of schema, assimilation, accommodation, and equilibration. Questions often test your ability to identify which stage a child belongs to based on a described behaviour, or ask about classroom implications of Piaget's theory. - **Confusing assimilation with accommodation** → Assimilation fits new info into existing schemas (no change to schema); accommodation changes the schema to fit new info. Remember: Assimilation = Adding to existing; Accommodation = Adjusting the structure.
- **Believing stages can be accelerated through teaching** → Piaget held that stages are maturation-dependent. While enriched environments help, you cannot force a pre-operational child to think abstractly. Teachers should provide age-appropriate challenges, not skip stages.
