Product Manager
Business & ManagementOwn product outcomes. Sit between users, engineering, design, business. Career-of-careers.
What they actually do
PMs decide what gets built, define success metrics, prioritise the backlog, and ship features. They're the connecting tissue between user research, engineering, design, marketing, sales. Not the boss of anyone, but accountable for outcomes.
A typical day
- User + data analysis
- Roadmap planning + sprint prioritisation
- PRD writing + stakeholder alignment
- Cross-functional meetings (design, eng, sales, support)
- Launch + post-launch retros
How to become a Product Manager
3 viable paths.
BTech → MBA (top IIM) → Product role
Most common. PMs at top Indian unicorns + MNCs come heavily from IIM-A/B/C/L/I.
Engineering → Internal transfer to PM
Realistic for strong engineers at product companies. APM/Associate PM programs at Google, Microsoft, Atlassian, Razorpay, Atlassian India.
Consulting → PM
Mckinsey/BCG analysts transition into PM 3-5 years in.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree (CS preferred but not mandatory)
- MBA (highly preferred for non-engineers)
Skills that matter
- Product sense + user empathy
- Data analysis (SQL, Excel, Mixpanel)
- Communication + persuasion
- Technical fluency (enough to spec with engineers)
- Business acumen
Salary bands by experience
Wide bands — real salary depends on city, employer, performance. Pick the midpoint for planning.
- APM/Fresher (0-1 yr)₹15 - ₹35 LPA
IIM-A/B/C ₹30L+; lesser MBAs ₹15-20L.
- PM (2-5 yr)₹25 - ₹60 LPA
- Sr PM (5-8 yr)₹50 - ₹1.2 Cr
- Principal/Group PM (10+ yr)₹1 - ₹3 Cr+
Career growth + employers
APM → PM → Senior PM → Group PM / Principal PM → Director Product → VP Product → CPO
Top employers (informational, not endorsement)
- Razorpay, CRED, Flipkart, Swiggy, Zomato, PhonePe (Indian product)
- Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Atlassian (MNC)
Honest pros + cons
Pros
- Among highest-paying non-CXO roles in product companies
- Exit options into VC, startup founding, executive roles
- Cross-functional exposure unmatched
Cons
- Ambiguity high — no clear-cut deliverable
- Influence without authority — hard to manage
- Career path narrower outside product companies
Demand outlook
Strong. Senior PM compensation has compressed slightly in 2023-24 but long-term demand robust.
